My Kit - Part 1: Soft Goods

Kit -n.: Canadian Forces slang for any piece of military
equipment, be it a uniform, rifle, helicopter, or even
the soldier itself.

Some people have had questions about what kit I use, so in a couple of parts I’ll drop a list of what I use, and what I use it for.

Rickshaw Bags Commuter bag(1.0)

I found these guys when I was down in SF for Macworld back in 2009. Rickshaw is run by the former CEO and former chief designer of another bag outfit, Timbuk2. After a long conversation with the CEO, Mark Dwight, I bought a bag on the spot. Whats better than Rickshaw’s sustainability message( their “Zero” line of bags uses every scrap of fabric from the original cut of cloth used in the bag somehow) you can abuse the crap out of their bags and they look as good as the day you bought it. The new version of the commuter bag, the 2.0, is out but my bag still looks so good that I have no need to buy one.

Rickshaw Bags Moleskine Folio (First 50 release)

In the course of my conversation with Mark, I found out he was a big fan of Moleskine notebooks. He showed me prototype of Rickshaw’s prototype for a Moleskine folio, and me having a rather sizable paper fetish, pestered him until I got in on the first production batch. He was gracious about it and assured he would contact me, once they were ready to make a run. I got an email a few weeks later. It fits snugly in my bag along with my iPad and MacBook Pro, and gives a professional look to quite often dog eared and sticker-ridden Moleskines I carry around with me.

Triple Aught Design’s Stealth Hoodie Jacket

I had heard several friends talk about Triple Aught Design in the past, frequently associated with trips to San Francisco, where the company is based. I never realized how awesome they were until I stepped into their factory store earlier this year, during their clearout sale. the quality of their gear is excellent, and so far, has put up with a lot of abuse( do you see a pattern emerging?). I took it out to the east coast with me in early november and worked very well as a top shell against the wind(and coincedentally the Seattle rain i was leaving). With a sweater underneath it was plenty warm, when I finally closed the underarm vents I forgot I had unzipped.

Next time: Hard Kit.
